What size garage shed do I need?
Standard sizes Stockman builds: single garage 6m × 4m (one car + tools), double garage 6m × 6m (two cars side-by-side), triple-bay garage 9m × 6m (three cars or two cars plus workshop), oversized double 7m × 7m (two SUVs with door clearance and storage). Oversized garages with workshop or boat bays go from 9m × 9m up to 12m × 9m.
How much does a garage shed cost in 2026?
Most Stockman garage sheds run $15,000 to $55,000. A single garage at 6m × 4m sits around $15,000–$25,000; a double garage at 6m × 6m runs $20,000–$35,000; a triple-bay garage at 9m × 6m lands at $30,000–$50,000. Final price depends on size, wall height, slab spec, council overlays and finish features.
How tall should garage walls be?
Most off-the-shelf garages are 2.4m wall height — fine for a sedan or hatchback. Stockman recommends 2.7–3m for the same slab and roof cost — you get clearance for SUVs, 4WDs with rooftop tents, hoists, mezzanine storage, and tall vehicles. Go higher than 3m if you're parking a caravan, boat, truck or want a hoist for working underneath.
Do I need council approval for a garage shed?
Yes, in most cases. Any garage that fits a vehicle exceeds the 10m² / 2.4m / 5m thresholds that trigger Class 10a building approval. Stockman handles the council application, certifier inspection and any overlay checks (character, slope, flood, bushfire) as part of the build.
Gable vs skillion roof for a garage — which is better?
Gable (traditional pitched apex) suits most Australian houses and gives equal headroom across the floor — good for general use. Skillion (single sloping pane) gives a modern look, lets you maximise headroom on the high side (door wall) and save it on the low side (back wall), and is great for natural light. Cost is similar; pick on aesthetic and use case.
