The standard size for an Australian single garage shed is typically 3 meters by 6 meters, providing ample space to comfortably park one vehicle. At Stockman, we don’t limit you to the standard size and if you can fit it, we recommend at least 4 meters by 7 meters for your single garage shed (scroll down to see some ideas). What size is a standard single garage shed?
The Australian standard single garage is 6m × 4m — comfortable for one car, motorbike storage and tools along one wall. Stockman builds singles from 5m × 3m (compact, just one vehicle) up to 9m × 5m (single car with workshop bay or boat extension). The depth (length) matters more than width — a long single-garage suits a workshop pattern.
How tall should a single garage be?
Most kit single garages are 2.4m wall height, which suits a sedan or hatchback. Stockman recommends 2.7–3m — costs almost the same in steel and roof, but gives clearance for SUVs, 4WDs with rooftop tents, hoists and overhead storage. Go higher (3.6m+) if you're storing a 4WD with roof rack, a small caravan, a campertrailer or want to install a hoist.
How much does a single garage shed cost in 2026?
Most Stockman single garages run $15,000 to $25,000. A standard 6m × 4m × 2.7m gable garage starts around $15,000–$20,000; a wider 6m × 5m or skillion-roof variant lands at $18,000–$25,000; oversized singles with workshop or boat extensions push past $25,000. Final price depends on size, height, slab spec, council overlays and finish features.
Single vs double garage — which is right for me?
Single makes sense if you have one vehicle, limited block space, or just want secure storage with a small workshop bay. Double garage makes more sense if you have two vehicles, want a workshop alongside, or plan to add a caravan or trailer later. The cost difference is smaller than people think — a double is usually only 30–40% more than a single, not double, because the slab and roof scale better.
Do I need council approval for a single garage shed?
Yes, in most cases. A single garage at 6m × 4m × 2.7m exceeds all three Class 10a thresholds (10m² / 2.4m / 5m), so it triggers a building application. Stockman handles the council application, certifier inspection and any overlay checks (character, slope, flood, bushfire) as part of the build.
