Frequently Asked

Recreation shed questions, answered

What can I use a recreation shed for?
Recreation sheds typically house caravan or boat storage, dirt bikes and toys, a home gym, pool table or bar, kids' play area, art studio, or a quiet retreat away from the main house. Many homeowners design them as multi-use: a parking bay for the caravan plus a separate living area divided by an internal wall. Insulation, glass sliders and awnings make them year-round comfortable.
What size recreation shed do I need?
Depends on the activities. A dirt-bike shed for 2–3 bikes plus tools usually fits in 6m × 4m × 3m. A caravan-and-lifestyle combo shed needs at least 9m × 6m × 4m. A serious recreation shed with caravan storage, workshop bay AND living area typically lands at 12m × 9m × 4m. Add 1m clearance on every side around any vehicle or caravan.
Do I need insulation in a recreation shed?
Strongly recommended if you'll be spending time inside. Roof insulation alone (anti-condensation blanket plus reflective foil) makes a huge difference to summer comfort — drops the indoor temperature 5–10°C on a hot day. Wall insulation (glasswool batts behind internal cladding) takes it further and matters most in winter. If you want full liveability, add insulation to walls and roof, plus glazing on windows and doors.
Do recreation sheds need council approval?
Yes — Class 10a rules apply. Any recreation shed that fits a vehicle or caravan exceeds the 10m² / 2.4m / 5m thresholds. Stockman handles the council application, certifier inspection and overlay checks as part of the build. Worth noting: a recreation shed isn't a habitable structure under Class 10a — if you want to sleep in it, it needs a Class 1a conversion (full BCA compliance).
How much does a recreation shed cost in 2026?
Most Stockman recreation sheds run $25,000 to $80,000. A simple 6m × 4m hobby shed sits around $20,000–$30,000; an 8m × 6m caravan/recreation combo shed lands at $30,000–$50,000; a fully insulated 12m × 9m lifestyle shed with internal walls, glass sliders and awnings runs $50,000–$80,000+. Insulation, internal walls and glazing drive the price more than the bare shell.
