What’s the standard size for an Australian double garage shed? Generally you’re looking at 6 metres by 6 metres. This is enough to comfortably park two vehicles. Gable roof double garage

The traditional style — pitched apex roof, available with one wide double roller door or two single roller doors. Most kits sit at 2.4m wall height; we recommend 2.7m–3m for the same slab cost and a lot more cubic storage. 20-year warranty, 100% Australian steel and COLORBOND® materials.

Skillion roof double garage

The perfect complement to modern homes — single sloping roof pane, sleek contemporary lines. Skillion roof garages let you position the high side wherever you need it (front, side or rear) for a taller roller door or more natural light. Standard 6m × 6m or scaled to suit your block.

Double garage with double garaport (2 × 2)

Twice the footprint of a standard double garage at 12m × 12m. The garaport extension is a covered open-air bay — perfect for camping gear, boats, trailers or entertaining with the roller door closed in the rain. Made from Australian BlueScope Steel with a 20-year warranty.

Double garage with lean-to

Adds a roofed lean-to to either side of the standard double garage — great for an extra vehicle, trailer or alfresco area. Mind the opening height: 3.5m minimum if you're parking a vehicle underneath, or step the lean-to width out to 6m if you need to fit two vehicles side-by-side.

What size is a standard double garage shed?
The Australian standard double garage is 6m × 6m — enough to comfortably park two vehicles. Stockman doesn't lock you to a standard, though: most double garages we build sit between 6m × 6m and 9m × 7m depending on what you're storing alongside the cars (workshop bay, ride-on mower, kayaks, gym equipment). 6m × 6m is the minimum we'd recommend if you want both car doors to open without compromise.
How tall should a double garage shed be?
Most off-the-shelf kits come at 2.4m wall height. We recommend 2.7m–3m — the slab and roof cost stay almost identical, but you get a lot more cubic storage, room for a roof-mounted hoist, and clearance for taller vehicles, roof racks or a 4WD with rooftop tent. Go higher than 3m if you're parking a caravan, boat or truck.
How much does a double garage shed cost in 2026?
Most Stockman double garages fall between $20,000 and $35,000. The number depends on size, height, slab specification, council overlays, choice of doors and finish features. A standard 6m × 6m gable in a low-overlay zone sits at the lower end; a 9m × 7m skillion with extras (insulation, mezzanine, glass sliders) climbs into the high $30Ks. Do I need council approval for a double garage shed in Queensland?
Yes, in most cases. A double garage at 6m × 6m × 2.7m exceeds the 10m² / 2.4m / 5m thresholds that trigger Class 10a approval. Stockman handles every council application, certifier inspection and overlay check (bushfire, flood, slope, character) as part of the build. What's the difference between a gable, skillion, garaport and lean-to double garage?
Gable is the traditional pitched-apex roof (two sloping sides meeting at a peak) — best for matching most Australian homes. Skillion is a single sloping pane — sleek modern look, lets you maximise natural light or door height on the high side. Garaport adds a covered open-air bay alongside the garage — perfect for camping gear, boats or entertaining. Lean-to extends one side of the standard shed under its own roof — cheap way to add a vehicle bay or alfresco space.
Can I add a workshop, mezzanine or extra storage to a double garage?
Yes — Stockman double garages are fully customisable. Common add-ons include mezzanine flooring (extra storage above the parking bays), internal walls (a separate workshop or storage room), insulation, sliding glass doors, awnings and oversized roller doors. We work the add-ons into the design from day one rather than retrofitting, so the slab and engineering account for the load.
How long does a double garage take to build from quote to handover?
Allow around 6 months from initial quote through to a finished, handed-over double garage. That covers the full pipeline: design, council approval, manufacturing at our Toowoomba factory, slab pour and cure, then on-site construction. Complex council overlays or engineered slabs (sloping sites, soft soil) can run a little longer. If you're outside our service area and ordering a garage shed kit instead, allow around 6 weeks from order to delivery.
