What is a skillion garage?

A skillion roof garage is easily identified by its flat, mono-pitch roof. It has an asymmetrical slope, meaning the roof is higher on the one side. This minimalistic design is visually effective, with the clean lines giving your garage a sleek and contemporary feel.

It’s not just the looks, there are other benefits to a skillion garage. For a start, that flat sloping roof makes great drainage, allowing water and debris to easily slide off.

The flatness of the roof is also brilliant for hosting solar panels, and lots of them. If you’re looking to boost the eco credentials of your property, a skillion garage could prove very useful.

Frequently Asked

Skillion Garage shed questions, answered

What's a skillion-roof garage?
A skillion roof is a single sloping pane — one continuous slope from the high side to the low side, no apex. On a garage that means a sleek modern silhouette, taller wall on one side (good for the roller door), shorter on the other. Skillion garages are the popular modern choice — they pair well with contemporary homes and let you maximise headroom and natural light strategically.
Skillion vs gable roof for a garage — which is better?
Gable (traditional pitched apex) suits most existing Australian homes — equal headroom across the floor, cheap to build. Skillion (single sloping pane) gives a modern look, lets you push headroom up on one side (perfect for roller doors or a hoist) and save on the back wall. Skillion is slightly more expensive in steel but the same in slab and roof. Choose on aesthetic and use case.
How much does a skillion-roof garage cost?
Most Stockman skillion garages run 5–10% more than the gable equivalent — typically $16,000 to $40,000+ for residential use. A skillion single at 6m × 4m sits around $17,000–$23,000; a skillion double at 6m × 6m runs $22,000–$38,000; a skillion triple at 9m × 6m lands at $33,000–$50,000. The premium covers slightly more steel and a longer continuous roof sheet.
How tall should the high side of a skillion garage be?
Most residential skillion garages run a 3.3m high side and a 2.7m low side — a modest pitch that drains well and gives you taller roller-door clearance on the front wall. Tall skillion garages (4m+ high side) suit caravans, boats, hoists or tradesman vehicles. The rule of thumb: aim for the equivalent of a 2.7m gable shed, plus 600mm extra on the high side.
Can I add a lean-to or garaport to a skillion garage?
Yes — skillion garages take lean-tos and garaports cleanly because the existing roof slope continues naturally into the extension. Common pattern: a 6m × 6m skillion double garage with a 3m × 6m garaport carrying the same low-side line — single continuous roofline, no awkward roof junctions. Stockman engineers the extension into the design from day one.
