Skillion Roof Sheds

Skillion roof sheds are a stylish and functional flat-roofed shed suitable for most residential and commercial purposes. They’re a popular choice because they look good and can be designed to maximise storage and work space. The flat roof frees up internal height making for heaps of room inside.

What is a skillion roof shed?

The feature that defines skillion roof sheds is the flat angled roof. This is why they’re also known as a ‘mono pitch’ or ‘single pitch’ shed.

They’re popular when it comes to customising your outdoor shed because of their versatility. The skillion roof can be attached to an existing building as an add-on, or a standalone structure can be built using the single, sloping flat roof design.

You can also have either a single level or ‘double skillion’, a split-level structure as you can see in the image.

Their versatility and spaciousness means they’re suitable for most rural sheds or residential and commercial sheds. They can store large objects or machinery or be used for light industrial activity.

The benefits of a skillion shed

Why should you consider a skillion roof shed for your new steel structure? There are a bunch of reasons, particularly when it comes to Australia’s tough weather conditions:

The flat, sloping design of the roof line allows water to easily drain off.

A rainwater harvesting system can be implemented to reduce reliance on council water in the home.

The clean lines of skillion roof sheds have a sleek and modern appearance. They’re an attractive and eye-catching addition to a property.

The minimalistic design means fewer materials are used in the construction of the roof. The natural good water drainage means no extra drainage needs to be added.

Solar panels fit nicely onto the expansive flat area of the roof, ideal for eco-conscious and renewable energy lovers.

The sloping nature of the skillion means extra height to the shed as a whole, which leads to greater internal storage space. This can be further enhanced with additional solutions like a mezzanine.

The intense architectural statement of the minimalist design can be enhanced even more when you add an eave to the skillion roof.

Uses of skillion roof sheds

Residential

Skillion sheds are popular choices for residential sheds built in a backyard in metro areas. We’re not talking a small garden shed to park your mower in - we deal in big sheds here at Stockman. Double garages to park your pride and joy vehicle, with plenty of space to tinker on the dirt bikes or store your boat. Australian living at it’s finest.

Agricultural

Farm sheds need to offer the right mix of practicality and functionality. They have to withstand tough weather conditions, while providing space for apparatus, produce or even livestock storage. If you’re a farmer looking for a shed, take a look at the skillion roof sheds the Stockman designers can put together for you. They’re robust and tall enough for your big farming machines.

Commercial

With an industrial shed, functionality and toughness are key. The minimalist, space-abundant design of skillion sheds makes them appealing to commercial operators. Tradies, factories, workshops and studios can be easily housed under a custom design skillion roof. The Bluescope Steel and COLORBOND® materials we use makes them even more appealing.

Frequently Asked

Skillion Roof shed questions, answered

What is a skillion roof shed?
A skillion roof shed has a single sloping roof pane — one continuous slope from high side to low side, no central apex. Compared to a gable (traditional two-sided pitched roof), skillion gives you a sleek modern silhouette, better drainage on a single plane, and the option to maximise headroom or natural light on one specific side. Popular for modern garages, workshops, lifestyle sheds and acreage builds.
Skillion vs gable roof — which is better?
Gable suits traditional Australian homes — equal headroom across the floor, cheap to build, good for matching older houses. Skillion suits modern homes and specific use cases where you want headroom on one side: tall roller doors, hoists, mezzanine clearance, more natural light through a high-side window. Skillion is 5–10% more expensive in steel but reads cleaner. Choose on aesthetic and use case.
Can I have a double skillion shed?
Yes — a 'double skillion' has two sloping panes meeting at a low point in the middle (like an inverted gable) or two independent skillion sections. The first style is rare and creates drainage challenges. The second is common: two skillion bays side by side, each with its own slope, used for two-vehicle carports or split-use sheds where each side has different headroom needs.
How much does a skillion roof shed cost in 2026?
Most skillion roof sheds run 5–10% more than the gable equivalent. A skillion 6m × 4m garage starts around $17,000–$23,000; a 9m × 6m skillion workshop lands at $30,000–$50,000; a 12m × 9m skillion lifestyle shed runs $50,000–$80,000+. The premium covers slightly more steel and a longer continuous roof sheet, plus the high-side wall framing.
Do skillion roof sheds drain properly in heavy rain?
Yes — better than most gables, in fact. The single sloping pane sheds water cleanly to one side, where it's collected by a single gutter run. Pitch matters: Stockman builds skillion roofs at a minimum 3° pitch (typically 5–7°) to prevent ponding. Steeper pitches (10°+) work in high-rainfall areas. Box gutters and oversized downpipes handle even tropical downpours.
