Frequently Asked

Workshop shed questions, answered

What size workshop shed do I need?
Depends on the trade and tooling. A small home workshop for woodworking and hobbyist metalwork fits in 6m × 4m × 3m. A serious tradesman workshop with full benches, racks and a vehicle bay needs 9m × 6m × 3.6m. A commercial workshop with multiple work zones, a hoist or 3-phase machinery typically runs 12m × 9m × 4–5m. Always plan for clear floor space around moving machinery — minimum 1m on each side.
How much does a workshop shed cost in 2026?
Most Stockman workshop sheds run $25,000 to $80,000. A 6m × 4m hobby workshop sits around $20,000–$30,000; a 9m × 6m tradesman workshop with vehicle bay runs $35,000–$55,000; a 12m × 9m commercial-scale workshop with hoist, mezzanine and 3-phase pushes past $70,000. Wall height drives cost more than floor area — taller workshops cost significantly more.
How tall should a workshop shed be?
Standard workshop heights are 3m (basic hobby workshop) to 4.5m (commercial workshop with hoists or overhead storage). 3.6m suits most serious workshops — clearance for a 2-post hoist with a typical SUV up. Go to 4.5m+ if you're running a 4-post hoist, a small overhead crane, or working on tall vehicles like trucks or RVs. Cheaper to build tall than to retrofit later.
Do I need 3-phase power in a workshop shed?
Only if you're running serious machinery — large compressors over 3kW, welders over 350A, big lathes or mills, big extraction systems. For most home workshops and small tradesman shops, single-phase is plenty. Stockman roughs in the conduit during construction; a licensed electrician runs the cable. If you might need 3-phase later, run the conduit oversize now — costs little, saves a lot if you upgrade.
Do workshop sheds need council approval?
Yes — Class 10a rules apply for residential workshops, Class 7b/8 for commercial. Approval is required if the shed exceeds 10m² / 2.4m / 5m. Commercial workshops often need a Material Change of Use under the planning scheme too. Stockman handles every application and certifier inspection as part of the build.
