Custom Darling Heights Workshop Shed
Explore this massive custom Toowoomba workshop shed, complete with two mezzanines, Steel-Line roller doors, Bradnams windows and a carport awning.
A big shed is one thing… a big shed that makes smart use of space is another!
The owner of this Darling Heights property had some great ideas for how he needed to use his shed. As a busy mechanic, he needed space to store vehicles, engines and tools as well as lots of room to work.
As a starting point, we could maximise his Toowoomba block with a large shed footprint. We could also build high enough to accommodate two mezzanines, while adding large roller doors to get vehicles and equipment in and out. Multiple windows and sliding glass doors bring natural light into the building, and a covered side awning adds a usable outdoor area.
It’s an absolute beast of a shed from Stockman. Have a look at these features.
Darling Heights Workshop Shed Features

Serious size, clever additions - this is a workshop with functional flexibility. That future-proofs it for different uses down the track, making it a real value-add to this property.
Large Shed Footprint

Let’s start with the numbers. The main shed measures:
8m wide x 22.38m long x 5.1m high
That gives the owners close to 180 square metres of floor space before you even start counting the mezzanines and awning. There’s room for vehicles, machinery, a workshop setup and general storage.
The 5.1 metres height provides masses of vertical space to work with. We’ll delve into the details of the two mezz levels we included with this build next.
Two Mezzanine Levels

More than 5m of shed height can be put to smart use, which is exactly what this owner opted for. We incorporated two separate mezzanine areas into the build:
- Mezzanine 1: 7.15m x 3.727m x 2.7m
- Mezzanine 2: 3.7m x 4.227m x 2.7m
The beauty is that they create floor area without changing the shed footprint. You get extra storage room, or even space to put a desk in and use as an office. Meanwhile, the floor below remains available for vehicles, machinery and larger equipment.
Classic 15-Degree Gable Roof

A classic gable roof with a 15-degree pitch sits up top. It’s a popular choice across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs - simple, practical and looks right at home on everything from larger properties like this to smaller suburban blocks. It’s a great angle if the owner wants to add solar panels down the track, and there’ll be no drainage issues with this shed.
Carport Awning

An 8m long x 2.83m wide awning at the front of the shed sits above a concrete floor. It’s used as a carport by the owner, but is a versatile addition with multiple uses, including outdoor work and keeping valuable equipment out of the weather.
Windows for Plenty of Natural Light

Big enclosed sheds can get dark inside, so we positioned multiple windows along the walls to let natural light in. The darker frames contrast nicely against the light Zincalume® exterior too - the finish is clean and eye-catching. Our windows all come from Bradnams, so you know they’re quality products that will last for decades, like the shed itself,
Large Sliding Glass Doors

Also from Bradnams, two large sliding glass doors let even more natural light in. Each is 2100mm high x 1810mm wide, helping provide a solid connection between the interior and the sprawling property outside. More access points means improved functionality, so these sliding doors are really adding to the usability of the shed.
Two Steel-Line Roller Doors

Of course, you still need to get the big gear inside, which is what these two Steel-Line roller doors in Colorbond Monument do. Each measures 3000mm high x 4370mm wide, able to accommodate vehicles, trailers or machinery. The doors are positioned on different faces of the building, so you’re not forced to bring everything in and out through the same point.
Larnec Personal Access Door

A Larnec personal access door provides another way into the shed without opening one of the large roller doors. They’re a great way to manage foot traffic, and are a feature that shed owners always end up using way more than they thought they would.
Opening a roller door to grab a tool or a set of keys you forget gets tiring fast. A PA door means you can easily slip in and out. Larnec builds them strong and secure too - this one will keep going for generations without any hassle.
Colorbond ®Zincalume® Roof and Wall Cladding

We love that the owner went with Zincalume® across both the roof and wall cladding. It creates a clean silver finish that works great on a workshop shed, and also blends in nicely with this property.
Colorbond® Zincalume is a good fit for Australian conditions. Its aluminium, zinc and magnesium alloy coating provides long-term corrosion protection, so it’s a practical choice for a hard-working shed.
BlueScope Steel Frame

Underneath all the roof and cladding is a strong BlueScope steel frame - the backbone that will support this steel structure for many years ahead. We use Australian-made BlueScope steel across our Stockman sheds because the frame isn’t an area that you can take a chance on inferior quality steel. It carries the structure and deals with local Queensland weather conditions. And when your shed measures longer than 22m, that’s a lot of work it’s doing.
Built to Suit the Block

As with all our sheds, we consult with property owners extensively about their block of land and the type of shed they have in mind. If needed, we’ll do a site visit to help guide you to the right design for your land.
With this shed, we’ve considered the slab, retaining work, and surrounding access areas to ensure a large building sits properly on the block. On projects like this, going for a custom-built shed makes a lot of sense, particularly at this size.
