Keeping your hay safe

Hay takes up a lot of space, and as a result isn’t the easiest product to store. Stockman Sheds will create a large shed perfectly suited to the size of your hay harvest. We’ll build it wide and we’ll build it tall, allowing for easy packing and adequate airflow to prevent moisture buildup. You can choose to have a gable roof or a flat roof design, with open walls or closed walls.

Whatever design you go with, your Aussie shed quality is guaranteed. We use Colorbond materials and 100% Australian Bluescope Steel with a 20 year manufacturers warranty. It’s non-corrosive and it’s built to last! The components of your custom built hay shed are manufactured in our Australian facility, and we have a team of experienced, local tradies who’ll build your shed for you if you’re in our service area.

Hay shed kits

If you’re not in our service area, do not stress! We can deliver a Stockman Shed to you anywhere in Australia. Our self-build shed kits can be built by you if you have the necessary skills, or you can get a local builder to help you.

The process is simple. You talk to our team, and they design the hay shed you’re looking for. There’s a six week timeframe while the components get manufactured in our facility, and then it gets delivered to your farm. Once it arrives, we’re here to answer any questions about the shed building process!

Frequently Asked

Hay Sheds shed questions, answered

What size hay shed do I need?
Depends on bale type and storage volume. A small 50-round-bale shed for a hobby farm usually runs 12m × 9m × 4.5m. Working farms storing 200–500 round bales need 18m × 12m × 5m or larger. Major cropping operations storing 1,000+ bales usually need 24m × 18m × 5–6m. Always factor in telehandler clearance — most need 4.5m minimum to manoeuvre with a bale spike.
How tall does a hay shed need to be?
A standard 5x4 round bale is about 1.5m tall; stack 3 high and you need 4.5m clear under the roof, plus telehandler clearance. Most working hay sheds end up at 5–6m wall height. Square bales or chaff hay can stack higher (4 levels = 6m+) so you sometimes need 6.5–7m walls. Better to overshoot — adding 500mm of wall height costs less than retrofitting.
Open-front or fully enclosed hay shed?
Open-front (3 sides clad, one side open) is the most common for hay — great airflow keeps the bales dry, easy access for the telehandler, cheaper per square metre. Fully enclosed sheds are better for high-value seed hay or chaff that needs UV protection, or in dust-prone areas. Some farms compromise with a roll-up curtain wall on one open side for storms.
How much does a hay shed cost in 2026?
Most Stockman hay sheds run $50,000 to $200,000+. A small 12m × 9m × 4.5m shed sits around $50,000–$80,000; an 18m × 12m × 5m mid-size shed lands at $90,000–$140,000; large 24m+ open-front cropping sheds push past $180,000. Open-front sheds are cheaper than enclosed equivalents because there's less cladding.
Do hay sheds need council approval in rural Queensland?
Usually yes. Even on rural land, Class 10a sheds over 10m² / 2.4m / 5m trigger a building application. A working hay shed used for commercial farming may also need a Material Change of Use under the local planning scheme as a Class 7b structure. Stockman handles every application and certifier inspection as part of the build.
