It’s not just their size though - these are practical steel structures that can complement working life on a busy farm or acreage block with ease. Their versatile three-bay layout and soaring internal height make for an unmistakable style that definitely turns heads in the Aussie countryside too.
This recent Stockman Sheds project in Postmans Ridge, near Toowoomba, is a great example. Built for a property that needed space and strength, it’s a barn that beautifully shows why this style continues to be a favourite.

There’s a wide range of things to love about this Toowoomba American barn – from its scale to its smart design choices.
Three Bay Design
American barns are characterised by their three-bay design, where the tall middle bay is flanked by two lower bays, one on either side. This allows for distinct zones to be created inside the shed - for example, taller vehicles parked in the middle, work benches set up in the smaller bays. You choose how you want to make use of the three bays available to you. This versatility is one of the big drawcards of this type of barn.
Plenty of Internal Space
The owners of this Postman's Ridge shed tapped into what an American Barn is all about and super-sized the design footprint. Building big sheds is an activity we’re particularly fond of here at Stockman, so this one was right up our alley. 16 metres long and 12 metres deep, there’s masses of internal space available here - and it's tough enough to take on whatever activity is thrown its way.
Large Verandah Awning
Running along the barn is a 5 metre wide verandah awning that runs the length of the shed, adding an outdoor zone that’s shaded, practical and perfect for extra cover. The verandah gives even more flexibility to the barn. Use it for extra storage space, an area to tinker on dirt bikes and other hobbies or even a spot to enjoy a BBQ on the weekend.
Dual Roller Doors
Two Steel-Line roller doors, one at the front and one at the rear of the property, give the shed drive-through capabilities and next-level convenience. The doors are secure and easy to use, so whether you’re backing in a ute, parking a tractor, or storing a boat, it’s going to be a hassle-free experience.
Multiple Windows
Plenty of Bradnams windows are dotted around the design, keeping the interior bright and airy. Natural light is a big plus in sheds this size, making them more comfortable to work or spend time in. Bradnams always deliver on quality, and they give us the flexibility in terms of style and size of the windows we use, which we can pass on to our customers.
Sliding Glass Door
Bradnams are also responsible for the glass sliding door installed on the front of the shed, added for easy access and to bring in more light. This is a nice lifestyle touch that looks great and enhances functionality.
Colorbond® Cladding and Roof
The barn is finished in Colorbond® steel for both the roof and cladding. All our sheds are Colorbond® sheds, because it's the local Australian raw material that is proven to last in our harsh climate. There’s a choice of 21 sublime colours, all inspired by the tones of the Australian landscape. We’ll find the perfect mix of tones for your roof and cladding, one that complements your property and its existing structures. On this shed, we went with Classic Cream for the walls and roof, while the barges and gutter are in Manor Red.
BlueScope Steel Frame
The core of this Postmans Ridge American Barn is a BlueScope Steel frame. It’s strong, dependable, and keeps everything square and solid. That’s the kind of backbone you need for a large shed like this. We use 15-20% more steel in our sheds than our competitors too, so you know you’re getting one tough steel structure.
