What is an American Barn shed?

These traditional style barn sheds incorporate three sheds into one. There’a a large bay in the centre, often with a gable roof with symmetrical awnings. This is flanked by a lean-to style bay on either side, also with symmetrical awnings, giving the structure epic visual appeal! It’s similar to a triple garage shed, just on a grander scale.

Having the three access points to your shed means it can be used for multiple applications. If you’re a farmer, the taller central tower is large enough to accommodate big agricultural machinery. There’s also space for cars, horses, boats, dirt bikes and whatever other toys need storing.

Customised American Barns

Stockman Sheds don’t do standard sheds. They’re all tailored to your exact requirements, meaning you get your fully customised shed, how YOU want it. This means you have high levels of customisation to you with your American barn shed, particularly when you have the three spaces to work with.

For example, you could make the central tower extra tall and add a mezzanine floor to it. You could have roller doors on two of the bays, and an open awning on the third bay, verandah style! You can choose your colour scheme, decide on how many windows you need, add extra bays or lean-tos and so much more!

American Barn shed kits

We supply DIY American barn shed kits to customers who don’t live within our service area. Pre-engineered in our factory, they can be delivered to wherever you live in Australia. If you have the necessary handyman skills you can construct your American barn yourself, if not then we’d suggest getting the help of an expert local shed builder.

Frequently Asked

American Barn shed questions, answered

What is an American Barn shed?
An American Barn is a three-bay shed: a tall central tower flanked by two lower lean-to bays, all under one symmetrical roofline. The central tower usually runs 4.5–6m wide with a high gable, while the lean-to wings run 3–4.5m wide with their own pitched roofs. The result is a shed with serious visual presence and three distinct usable spaces — perfect for separating vehicles, machinery and lifestyle storage, or for a workshop, stables and tack-room combo.
How big is a typical American Barn?
A standard Stockman American Barn lands around 15m × 12m × 5m high, but they scale anywhere from 12m × 9m for a smaller acreage build up to 24m × 18m for serious rural use. The central tower height is usually 4.8–6m to fit caravans, trucks, horse floats or hay; the lean-to wings sit at 2.7–3.6m. Every dimension is custom — pick the proportions to suit your block.
How much does an American Barn shed cost in 2026?
Most Stockman American Barns fall between $60,000 and $150,000. A 12m × 9m three-bay barn starts around $60,000–$80,000; a 15m × 12m mid-range build sits at $80,000–$120,000; large 18m+ rural barns push $130,000–$200,000+. The roofline complexity (three pitched bays vs a single gable) does add to the price compared to a regular shed of the same footprint. See shed prices for what drives the number.
What's the difference between an American Barn and a regular gable shed?
A regular gable shed has one continuous pitched roof across one wide span. An American Barn has THREE roofs: a tall central tower plus two lower symmetrical lean-tos, giving it the classic barn silhouette. The advantages: more architectural presence, three distinct functional spaces under one structure, and natural separation between work and storage zones. The trade-off: more steel, more roofline detailing, more cost per square metre than a basic gable.
Can I add a mezzanine or loft to an American Barn?
Yes — the tall central tower of an American Barn is purpose-built for a mezzanine or hayloft. A typical mezz adds 30–50% more usable floor area and works perfectly for storage, a home office, or a guest space (with a Class 1a conversion). Stockman designs the mezzanine into the engineering from day one — slab spec, column placement, stair access — rather than retrofitting.
