What's the difference between a barn-style shed and a regular shed?

A barn-style shed has the classic Australian rural aesthetic: pitched gable roof, often with awnings or lean-to additions, and a more architectural visual presence than a basic Colorbond box. Stockman builds two main barn-style sheds — the American Barn (three-bay central-tower design) and the traditional Aussie barn (single-span gable with optional symmetrical awnings). Both are fully customisable.

How much does a barn-style shed cost?

Most Stockman barn-style sheds run $50,000 to $150,000+ depending on size and which roofline you choose. A traditional 12m × 9m gable barn starts around $40,000; a 15m × 12m American Barn lands at $80,000–$120,000; a large 18m+ statement barn pushes past $150,000. The roofline complexity (gable + awnings vs three-bay tower) drives cost more than overall footprint.

Can a barn-style shed match my house aesthetic?

Yes — that's one of the main reasons people choose barn-style over a generic shed. Stockman matches roof colour, wall colour and trim to your house using the 22 standard COLORBOND® colours. Common patterns: Surfmist walls + Monument trim for a coastal Hamptons look; Manor Red or Heritage Green for a country aesthetic; Basalt or Night Sky for a modern matte finish.

Do barn-style sheds need council approval?

Yes — same Class 10a rules as any other shed. Approval is required if the shed is larger than 10m², taller than 2.4m, or longer than 5m on any side. Most barn-style sheds tick all three. Stockman handles the application, certifier inspection and any character or rural-residential overlay checks as part of the build.

Can I add a mezzanine or loft to a barn-style shed?

Yes — barn-style sheds with a tall central span are perfect for a mezzanine. Common uses include a hayloft on rural properties, extra storage, a home office or studio, or a guest space (which would need a Class 1a conversion for habitable use). Stockman engineers the mezzanine into the design from day one so the slab and columns carry the load properly.
