The Woodland Grey Look

A Natural Choice for Australian Sheds

The grey-green tones of Colorbond Woodland Grey are easy to match with the colours of existing buildings on a property. They’re calm and unobtrusive - a great choice for either the roof and cladding or as a colour accent on the gutters and barges.

Why Woodland Grey

Why is Woodland Grey popular for Colorbond sheds?

We build a lot of Woodland Grey sheds on country blocks around South East Queensland. It’s a favourite on rural properties because it borrows its colour tone from the Australian landscape: it’s a muted grey-green that sits beautifully alongside gum trees, paddocks and bushland.

On big acreages, it doesn’t dominate the landscape and become the centre of attention. It gives the shed a softer appearance that settles it into the surrounds.

Part of the appeal is that it isn’t restricted to the countryside. Woodland Grey also works well around suburban homes and established gardens, especially where similar grey, green, or earthy tones are already present.

When you want a little more contrast, there’s plenty to work with. Lighter roofing and doors can brighten the overall design, while darker trims can add some definition.

Let’s take a look at some of our recent shed builds that have used Woodland Grey. It’s always helpful to see a colour sitting live in its natural surroundings. It tells you so much more than a colour sample sheet can.

Colour Combinations

Popular Woodland Grey shed colour combinations

There are plenty of directions you can take Woodland Grey. Using similar colours on other aspects of the shed build will make for a subdued and calm finish. Or you could make individual parts of the shed stand out by using darker or lighter colours.

Here are three combinations we’ve used on real Stockman builds.

Surfmist roller doors and woodland grey shed cladding

Woodland Grey and Surfmist

  • Woodland Grey®
  • Surfmist®

Woodland Grey and Surfmist make a natural pairing, balancing the earthy green-grey of Woodland Grey with the much lighter Surfmist. The contrast helps define different parts of the shed while keeping the overall colour scheme clean and understated.

Colorbond shed in Woodland Grey, Windspray and Monument

Woodland Grey, Windspray and Monument

  • Woodland Grey®
  • Windspray®
  • Monument®

This combination layers three darker, neutral tones without making the shed feel too uniform. Woodland Grey and Windspray sit comfortably together, while Monument adds a darker colour that can help define the doors, gutters or barges.

Shale Grey doors and Woodland Grey cladding

Woodland Grey and Shale Grey

  • Woodland Grey®
  • Shale Grey™

Woodland Grey and Shale Grey create a softer combination with less contrast between the two colours. The cooler, lighter Shale Grey offsets the deeper Woodland Grey nicely, giving the shed a balanced look.

How does Colorbond Woodland Grey look on a shed?

Woodland Grey takes its cues from the Australian bush, blending deep grey with subtle green undertones for an earthy colour that sits beautifully in the outdoors.

It responds to its surroundings - against gum trees, paddocks and established vegetation, the green tones tend to come forward. Against open sky, concrete or lighter buildings - you’re more likely to notice the grey.

Similarly, in direct sun Woodland Grey can look noticeably lighter, while shade and overcast conditions bring out its deeper, moodier side.

Scale matters too. A small colour swatch simply can’t show you what Woodland Grey will look like across a 20-metre shed. Add a contrasting roof, roller doors, gutters and trims, and the finished result can look different again.

It’s helpful to look at real sheds. The Stockman designers can take you through different examples of Colorbond colours like Woodland Grey to help you land on the right tone for your shed.

Roof Colour

What colour roof should you have on a Woodland Grey Shed?

There’s no rule saying Woodland Grey walls need a matching roof. Choosing a lighter roof can create contrast and make the roofline stand out, while similar tones give the shed a more uniform appearance.

It’s also worth considering your home, existing buildings and the surrounding property when choosing a colour combination. The surrounding trees and vegetation can also influence your colour choice.

Our designers will work through the complete colour scheme with you, including the roof, roller doors, gutters, barges and trims, so everything works together.
